Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu meets with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el Sissi in New York

Sisi "expressed his desire to assist in efforts to achieve peace between Israel and the Palestinians and the region", the statement said.

Departing from his prepared remarks to the UN General Assembly, Sisi said he wanted to "tell the Palestinian people, it is important to unite ... to overcome the differences and to be ready to accept co-existence with the other, with Israelis, in safety and security".

Sisi met earlier on Monday with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas in New York City during which the two discussed the status of the Israeli-Palestinian peace process, according to the PA's official Wafa news agency. On Tuesday the adulation reached new heights when he not only met in public with Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu but clearly enjoyed himself at the same time.

The Egyptian leader made a similar appeal to Israelis, saying that decades of Israeli-Egyptian peace could be expanded to the Palestinians to "overcome the barrier of hatred forever". It was the first time Sisi and Netanyahu have held public talks. Israeli opposition leader Isaac Herzog accompanied Netanyahu at that meeting, where the men discussed a potential regional peace initiative, Haaretz reported at the time.

A State of department official said at the time that the suspension decision is a message that the USA is not happy with the lack of progress in human rights in Egypt and a recent law on non-governmental organizations (NGOs), stating "we want to see improvements".

Both the Bahraini and Egyptian events adhere to the narrative often touted by Netanyahu that a significant regional shift is occurring - and that Arab nations are becoming more pragmatic in their approach toward relations with the Jewish state.

Trump has described peace between Israelis and Palestinians as "the ultimate deal".

Both met in NY on the sidelines of UN General Assembly's annual session, discussing efforts to revive the Middle East peace process.

Israel and Egypt signed a 1979 treaty that began with overtures toward peace in 1977.

In fact, it was el-Sisi's second meeting in recent months with a forum of Jewish-American leaders.
