CVS Limiting Opioid Prescriptions

CVS to Limit Opioid Prescriptions to 7-Day Supply

CVS to follow federal guidelines for opioid prescriptions

Opioid painkiller prescriptions will be limited to a seven-day supply for certain conditions, CVS Pharmacy announced Thursday.

To support this goal, CVS Caremark will roll out an enhanced opioid utilization management approach for all commercial, health plan, employer and Medicaid clients as of February 1, 2018 unless the client chooses to opt out.

Placing stricter limits on prescription won't be a silver bullet solution to the epidemic, but stemming the tide of opioids entering American homes can help prevent misuse and new addictions. In addition, it will require the use of short-period pain relief opioids before providing extended-release opioids.

The CVS announcement comes on the heels of a special publication released by the National Academy of Medicine, "First, Do No Harm", which calls on the leadership and action of doctors to help reverse the "course of preventable harm and suffering from prescription opioids". The plan also includes an expansion of the drug disposal collection program which will add more kiosks at retail pharmacies nationwide. The new guideline does not limit patients being treated for chronic pain.

CVS said it provides medications to almost 90 million people, so the company is hoping to take the lead and influence other providers to follow suit. These guidelines will serve as a resource for community health centers receiving grants from this partnership to provide treatment for opioid addiction. CVS' Our Pharmacists Teach program has reached out to about 300,000 students to discuss the dangers of opioid abuse and is planning to offer more education on the subject.

"Today we are announcing an expansion of our enterprise initiatives to fight the opioid abuse epidemic that leverages CVS Pharmacy's national presence with the capabilities of CVS Caremark, which manages medications for almost 90 million plan members".
