Ryanair flight cancellations: your rights and how to claim compensation
"We have messed up in the planning of pilot holidays, and we're working hard to fix that", Chief Marketing Officer Kenny Jacobs said after Ryanair revealed the timetable changes.
The company has informed all passengers whose flights have been cancelled, with a total of 56 flights cancelled today, 12 of which are departing from or arriving in Dublin.
Ryanair is mandated by the Irish Aviation Authority to bring staff time-off in line with the calendar year from January 1, requiring it to distribute the backlog before the end of 2017.
Another factor could be the number of pilots who have left the airline for rival Norwegian - over 140 staff members have already moved this year.
Why are Ryanair cancelling flights?
On Saturday, the airline released a list of all of the flights that have been cancelled until Wednesday September 20. Ryanair knows what flights they are going to cancel and they need to make that information clear to their intending passengers.
"We sincerely apologise", Mr O'Leary told Sky News, adding: "It is clearly a mess, but in the context of an operation where we operate almost 2,500 flights every day it is reasonably small". The airline has announced cancellations of between 1,500 to 2,000 flights over the next six weeks. If you're flying with Ryanair, you can check the status of your flight here.
"Ryanair must quickly honour its legal duty to arrange alternative flights or provide a full refund, as well as reimbursing reasonable out-of-pocket expenses".
Ireland's aviation commission say Ryanair must offer its customers an alternative flight or a full refund if a service is cancelled.
If you are affected you should have received an email, otherwise your flight should remain unchanged. Be sure to document what you spend, though and keep receipts.
"It's also essential that Ryanair release a full list of flights that will be affected so that passengers have as much time as possible to make alternate arrangements".
Analysts at Dublin-based Goodbody Stockbrokers estimated the cancellations would cost the airline about €34.5 million, comprising €23.5 million in compensation, €6.3 million in lost fees, and €4.7 million in subsistence such as meals, drinks and accommodation.

U.S. top court temporarily upholds Trump's refugee ban
The dispute concerns the reach of the high court's June ruling , which allowed the president's order to take partial effect. What isn't settled is a lower court order protecting refugees who do not have close family members in the United States.
