Indonesia: over 57000 flee home as volcano may erupt in Bali

50000 evacuate as Bali volcano swells

"But it can not be predicted when it will happen", Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, spokesman for the disaster mitigation agency, said.

"Officers continue to sweep the area and are appealing for people to evacuate", he said.

Another disaster agency official, Waskita Sutadewa in Bali, said people have scattered to all corners of the island and some have crossed to the neighboring island of Lombok.

"This number of seismicity is an unprecedented seismic observation at Agung volcano ever recorded by our seismic networks", the Volcano Observatory Notice for Aviation said in a statement.

Thousands are living in temporary shelters after a 12km exclusion zone was set up around the mountain.

Tarsisia Ni Nyoman Juliarti told ucanews.com that she and her family fled their home in Padangkerta, in Karangasem district on September 23 "because we fear an eruption".

"I ask everybody near Gunung Agung to listen to the officials, the governor, and the mayor's instruction so we can all minimise the impact of this volcano".

Balinese residents, worldwide NGOs and the government have begun organising aid.

Vehicles loaded with noodles, mineral water and blankets have been sent to the evacuation centres, while residents around the island have been collecting donations.

"We have already sold our cattle, because we thought it was better than leaving them there for nothing", he said.

The government's humanitarian assistance plan will see the distribution of hundreds of thousands of face masks.

Almost five million people visited Bali in 2016.

Authorities had previously warned that people of region and tourists should stay at least 12 kilometers away from volcano, forbid tourist attractions and camping.

But Spanish tourist Jordi Portalo, 23, who is visiting the beaches in the Nusa Dua area, said he was unperturbed by the rumbling volcano.

Flights to and from the island have not been interrupted but airlines are watching the situation closely.

Virgin Australia flights bound for Bali are taking on extra fuel in Darwin in case an eruption means they need to turn back, Australia's 9 News reported.

The mountain, 72 kilometers (45 miles) to the northeast of the tourist hotspot of Kuta, is among more than 120 active volcanoes in Indonesia.

The volcano last erupted in 1963 killing more than 2,000 people.
