Together with Asapov, that brings the overall death toll of Russian troops in Syria to 37.

Lieutenant-General Valery Asapov was killed in Syria, when Islamic State militants (the terrorist organisation is banned in Russia) attacked Russian and Syrian troops.

Russian Federation said on Thursday that if US-backed forces like the SDF threatened Syrian government troops, it would not hesitate to target them.

Russian airstrikes and artillery fire hit positions of the USA -backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in Syria's eastern province of Deir al-Zour on Monday, the SDF said in a statement.

Commenting on the images, the Russian Defense Ministry said that the lack of screening patrol to protect the U.S. outposts might suggest that the United States forces "feel absolutely safe" in the ISIS-controlled area.

Army Col. Ryan Dillon, spokesman for the anti-Islamic State coalition Operation Inherent Resolve, told Military Times that the SDF hasn't reported any casualties to the coalition and has only noted the presence of indirect fire.

The outlet reported that the meeting came after Russian warplanes attacked positions of the Syrian Democratic Forces, a group that is backed by the U.S.

"This is the first gas or oil field in the campaign, which we have liberated", said the commander of the group whose campaign is in parallel with an ongoing battle for the nearby Raqqa city. Moscow denied the allegation that it struck the militia's forces at the Conoco gas plant.

Moscow and Washington back separate military forces in the Syrian war, both of which are advancing against Islamic State (IS) militants in the east of the country near the Iraqi border.

Russian soldiers stand guard in a central street in Syria's eastern city of Deir Ez-Zor.

Russian and US battles against Islamic State in Syria have mostly stayed out of each other's way, with the Euphrates often acting as a dividing line. The U.S. -led coalition said it could not confirm who carried out the strike.

A spokesman for the US-led coalition, Colonel Ryan Dillon, said rounds had hit in the area around the SDF but he could not confirm they were fired by Russian Federation.
