LIVE: Apple prepares to unveil new iPhone range

Longtime Apple expert Gene Munster, now managing partner at research and venture capital firm Loup Ventures, predicts 20 percent of the iPhones sold during the next year will be the new $1,000 model.

Apple is playing catchup to rivals like LG and Samsung, who have released phones whose screens run almost edge-to-edge.

While Apple lauded that the new back-cameras on the iPhone X and iPhone 8 were "calibrated for AR", - something undoubtedly true of any camera running ARKit - the only mentions of model-specific AR features were confined to redesigned front-facing camera tracking on the iPhone X thanks to the new camera array which includes an infrared camera, flood illuminator and dot projector. The iPhone X is a more premium device that does away with the Home button and features an OLED screen, but those hoping to get their hands on it will have to wait for its release on November 3 (and be willing to pony up $1,000-or more). Of course, Apple could change its branding decisions at the last minute. Now, Apple Watch will notify users when it detects an elevated heart rate when they don't appear to be active.

Forget about needling your friends in the telcos, they are sworn to secrecy.

The keynote starts at 10am PST/1pm EST, although it likely won't get going exactly on schedule, and you can see it live on Apple's site... sorta. The Series 3 watch will cost $399. On Tuesday, at its annual product rollout in Cupertino, California, Apple is expected to unveil even more ways to bring information into your cloud.

Just how much are you willing to pay for the new iPhone?

Grignon would later become the first person to receive a call from an iPhone. So you may not enjoy the full telco subsidy. The new phones come out on September 22. The mat would be available from next year. Media statements on pricing and availability are being prepared right now. Apple knows this. It's supporters, well, I'm not sure that they do. There will be a rush for the new sets. ("X" is pronounced 10, not the letter X.) It loses the home button, which revolutionized smartphones when it launched; offers an edge-to-edge screen; and will use facial recognition to unlock the phone. Instead of the iPhone 7s, Apple has launched the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus, the direct successor (s) to the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus launched previous year. Consequently, colours will be more vibrant and there's superb contrast. The first two phones, incremental upgrades over last year's iPhone 7, will be available in India from September 29, with prices starting at Rs 64,000.

The iPhone 8 comes in silver, gray and gold, offering 64GB or 256GB in available space. You unlock the phone simply by looking at it and swiping up. It supports the LTE high-speed mobile wireless data standard so users can stream music and check digital maps on their wrist.

Another new feature leaked is possible a new type of communication in the iMessages app, called Animoji. The iPhone 8 Plus features dual 12MP cameras as well. Quite a neat feature to look forward to. Since it is new, thee will probably be a learning curve.

Part of the product unveil included augmented reality support.
