Venezuela's Supreme Court Gives Opposition Mayor 15-Month Jail Term

James Litton Lessons we should all learn from the election

The Latin American Foreign Ministers bloc on Tuesday also said the Venezuelan National Constituent Assembly convened by President Nicolas Maduro and tasked with drafting a new Constitution was "illegitimate".

Venezuelans voted on July 30 and elected a 545-member constituent assembly that gave Maduro new powers by dissolving state institutions.

Maduro has promised the assembly will bring peace to the country, and help end an acute economic crisis marked by shortages of food and other basic goods, but the opposition says it is aimed at consolidating a dictatorship. "We are looking for ways to coexist".

The assembly will rewrite the Constitution and govern the nation for up to two years without elections. In Venezuela, forgiveness so far is not on offer.

His next action could be to deprive of parliamentary immunity of certain opposition mps to send them to jail. "Surely they will use this to continue to persecute and threaten".

European Union foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini's office said Monday that the assembly's actions and removal of Luisa Ortega Diaz "have further weakened the prospects for a peaceful return to the democratic order". In May, Maduro widened its powers to investigate political attacks in 2017, majority aimed at his government.

The new constitutional assembly has signaled it will act swiftly in following through with Maduro's commands.

Diosdado Cabello, a political strongman, member of the new assembly and supporter of Maduro, said this week that the truth commission would be an instrument to advance the ruling party's goals.

"It is unclear who the perpetrators in the remaining deaths may be", it said.

Opposition lawmakers said Tuesday that they were barred from entering the gold-domed legislative palace after security forces led by Rodriguez broke into the congress late Monday.

"This government invades the spaces that are no longer able to legitimately win", opposition leader Stalin Gonzalez said on Twitter.

Also Tuesday, the Supreme Court ordered the arrest of the mayor of the district of Chacao, in Caracas, Ramon Muchacho, for not following an order to remove barricades during recent protests.

Meanwhile, foreign ministers from 14 countries met in Peru in hopes of finding a regional response to Venezuela's political crisis.

It also wants the group to condemn the new assembly's firing of Venezuela's attorney general, Luisa Ortega, an outspoken critic of Maduro, after she broke ranks with him.

For Corbyn, the solution to the crisis in Venezuela is "a dialogue and a process that respects the independence of the judiciary and respects the human rights of all".

In the aftermath, the venezuelan president has proposed a "regional dialogue" with these countries in order, according to him, to "restore the standards of respect for global law".

Despite the strong arm tactics by the Maduro government, the opposition called for another nationwide protest Tuesday.

Protests that drew hundreds of thousands at their peak have drawn fewer people as fear and resignation creep in.
