IOM staff assist Somali and Ethiopian migrants who were forced into the sea by smugglers

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) says more than 50 refugees, mostly teenagers, have been "deliberately" drowned by a human smuggler in rough seas off Yemen's coast.

Five bodies have been recovered while around 50 people were missing after the incident on Thursday, the International Organisation for Migration reported.

As Yemen coast came near, smugglers forced 120 migrants into the sea. According to the rescue teams the average age of the drowned migrants was 16.

The dead were buried by those who survived.

Migrants, majority Ethiopians, try to make their way to the oil-rich Gulf countries. "Too many young people pay smugglers with the false hope of a better future", he said.

Yet the IOM estimates some 55,000 migrants have left the Horn of Africa headed for Yemen since the start of 2017, more than half of them under the age of 18. "They (the smugglers) are basically continuing their business by killing people", he said.

On this route, migrants are exposed to the dangers of Yemen's conflict, with some having been killed in the war. Most of the people on the boat were from Ethiopia and Somalia. "And they have no choice", de Boeck told the AP. "They drop them near the shore and turn around and get more".

UNHCR data shows that the number of migrants, refugees and asylum seekers arriving in Yemen has steadily climbed over the last 10 years - doubling from 2006, when 25,898 arrivals were recorded, to 2008, when 50,091 people reportedly arrived, and then again in 2015, when almost 100,000 people landed on Yemen's shores.

After the smugglers dumped their human cargo, she says they turned back to Somalia to pick up more people and bring them back on the extremely unsafe, deadly voyage. They didn't succeed, they went back home, but the parents didn't agree with the fact that they didn't succeed so they send them back.

The Regional Mixed Migration Secretariat, a group of worldwide agencies that monitors migration, says 111,500 refugees and migrants arrived in Yemen previous year and 100,000 in 2015, contributing to a humanitarian crisis in that country.

Many others also try to reach Europe via Libya and the Mediterranean Sea.
