Insipred by Hope, Windies level series with stunning win

England's captain Joe Root runs between wickets on the third day of the second international Test match between England and the West Indies at Headingley cricket ground in Leeds northern England

Yet his 118 not out on Tuesday, following his first-innings 147, saw the Barbados batsman become the first man to score two hundreds in a first-class match in 127 years of cricket at Headingley.

What a five days.

Having successfully steered his team through six nervy overs before stumps yesterday, Brathwaite was relieved to see an edge off Stuart Broad put down by Cook in the slips. Micro blogging site Twitter was abuzz with tweets pouring in appreciating West Indies' victory. Interestingly, this is first Test win for Windies in England in 17 years.

West Indies skipper Jason Holder was ecstatic to have levelled the series at 1-1, and said: "I always believe in this group, we've done some outstanding things".

James Anderson, needing three wickets to become the first England bowler to take 500 Test wickets, ended up wicket-less - his historic moment on hold, at least, until next week's third Test at Lord's.

Blackwood also got a life when Stokes dropped him in the deep but with just six runs needed off nearly as many overs at the time and while Blackwood fell with victory in sight, England's fate was already sealed.

In an exciting turnaround on Monday, England declared on 490 for eight, a lead of 322 after a superb performance by Moeen Ali gave them a good shot at victory. Hope was the more fluent and stylish, his half-century coming off just 70 deliveries compared to the 98 balls it took Brathwaite, but both played straight, the recipe for success on a pitch with uneven bounce, and took advantage of scoring opportunities when they presented themselves. Windies still required 76 runs to win and just over 20 overs in which to do it but the tourists had clearly made a decision to go for it.

As well as Blackwood, Hope had great support from Roston Chase, and, of course, Kraigg Brathwaite at the top of the order was just denied two centuries himself. "When the captain Joe Root got out they were 40-odd for four [overall] and we then dropped a catch soon after so the big moments we didn't play well at all", Estwick told reporters. Brathwaite's 180-ball innings, including 12 fours, meant the opener had batted for more than 10 hours in the match. Appropriately, it was Hope who struck the winning runs with a legside flick for two off Chris Woakes.

England s plight was summed up when Cook dropped Shai Hope on 106.

The third and final Test, also the series decider, starts at Lord's on Thursday 7 September.
