Colin Kaepernick Could Become Dolphins Starting Quarterback After Ryan Tannehill Injury

Report: Dolphins Fear Ryan Tannehill Needs Season-Ending Surgery

Jay Cutler has interest in playing for the Dolphins – if he's the starter: Reports

Leadership is crucial to the quarterback position, and if what Smith says is true, the Dolphins should not even think about Jay Cutler.

But to date, the Dolphins did not seek out a quarterback to complete with Moore for the starting spot. The Dolphins can only offer both of those things if Tannehill is out for the season, assuming they considered Cutler to be an upgrade over Matt Moore.

Whether Tannehill opts for surgery or not, he will miss "significant" time with his left knee injury, league sources told the Miami Herald on Friday.

"He's obviously waiting, and we all are", Moore said.

"We're still getting-I wouldn't say second and third (medical opinions), but we're probably going deeper than that", Gase said in his first comments since Tannehill got hurt.

The Dolphins may have been prepared for the prospect of Tannehill being out. The Dolphins will wait for more clarity on Tannehill before making a decision on adding another quarterback. Gase was noncomittal about bringing in any quarterbacks. "He was here watching tape yesterday with us and hanging out, so it was good".

Tannehill, who sustained the non-contact injury while running out of bounds during a team drill on Thursday, watched Friday's practice from the team cafeteria, his leg elevated. He saw a drop in interceptions (by 7) and fumbles ( by 3) that season and had a Bears-high 92.3 quarterback rating, enough to earn him another season with the team. Tannehill chose to get stem cell treatment instead of surgery on a partially torn ACL, and that seems like a mistake now.

It's hard. As a buddy, teammate you never want to see that happen. Cutler is slated to enter the broadcasting booth for Fox this season, but would reportedly consider delaying the move if he could start and be paid starter's money for the Dolphins.

Tannehill watched a portion of practice from inside the practice facility with his left knee in a brace and propped up on a chair, according to the Fort Lauderdale Sun Sentinel.
