Why Did Sean Spicer Resign as White House Press Secretary?

Natalia Veselnitskaya speaks to journalists in Moscow Russia. The Russian lawyer at the center of the June 2016 meeting with Donald Trump Jr. is known for her work trying to roll back U.S. sanctions on Russia. But Veselnitsk

According to The Times' sources, Spicer told the president he believed the decision was a significant misstep. Spicer's rocky relationship with the press became a hindrance, but what really seemed to diminish his stature at the White House were his series of gaffes that turned him into a talk-show punchline and internet meme.

"One of the biggest mistakes that I made because I was an unexperienced person in the world of politics, I was supporting the other candidate", Scaramucci said.

"Sean will continue to serve the administration through August and the president has also appointed Anthony Scaramucci as communication director", Huckabee Sanders said.

Sanders has gained prominence in recent months as she's taken on more public-facing duties on President Donald Trump's communications team in the wake of former communications director Mike Dubke's resignation in May.

A source familiar with the deliberations told AFP Trump had tapped the NY financier and long-time backer over the objections of White House chief of staff and Spicer ally Reince Priebus.

While not a surprise, Mr Spicer's departure was abrupt and reflected turmoil in Mr Trump's legal and media teams amid a widening investigation of possible ties between Mr Trump's campaign and Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election.

Huckabee Sanders read a statement from Trump wishing Spicer well and expressing support for Scaramucci.

In terms of political experience, Scaramucci has always been associated with fund-raising programmes of various Republican leaders, dating back to 2012 US Presidential candidate Mitt Romney.

"The White House is on track and we are doing a very good job", he said, and at once said, "We are going to do a lot of winning".

From the start, Mr Spicer invited controversy, attacking the media in his debut appearance as press secretary for reporting what he called inaccurate crowd numbers at Mr Trump's inauguration.

News of Spicer's resignation set off a chaotic scene at the White House.

As he finished, Scaramucci blew an air kiss to the press corps. He regularly defended Trump on television during the campaign and was a campaign fundraiser.

Is that why he didn't get a White House job then?

Scaramucci was offered the job over objections by advisers Steve Bannon and Reince Priebus, according to a report from Axios, and CNN reports the former head of Skybridge Capital has accepted the job.
