It is a sin to declare someone dead without proof, says Sushma Swaraj on 39 Indians missing in Iraq

Won't declare 39 Indians held captive in Iraq dead without proof: Sushma Swaraj tells Lok Sabha

Sushma Swaraj had, earlier in July, also assured Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh that her ministry was making all-out efforts to trace and facilitate the return of the 39 Indians.

Today, while addressing the Lok Sabha on this issue, Sushma Swaraj stated in a very moving speech that she will not give the search up unless she gets sufficient proof that those abducted are no more.

The minister said persons accusing her were free to declare them dead if they did not trust her.

India had requested Iraq to locate the missing Indians after Iraqi forces recaptured Mosul from ISIS this month. "If they were killed, where are the bodies. Is there any blood trail", she said. While Indian officials remained quiet about what exactly was said during the meeting, Jaafari said afterward that Iraq still had "no substantial information" as to the location or fate of the suspected ISIS captives, The Hindustan Times reported. "I don't have concrete proof of their death, but I have no proof that they are alive either", she said. She said six sources have confirmed to her that they were alive, which includes a President and a foreign minister of two countries.

"There were contradictions in Masih's version". She said she would not declare them dead until she had evidence to support her claim. "That is why I told our Embassy to find out details about them", she said. The minister said that as soon as the Iraqi Prime Minister declared that Mosul has been recaptured from the IS, Minister of State for External Affairs V K Singh was sent to Iraq. "I have never misled". She further added that Bajwa had asked for an apology from her for misleading the nation, but instead of apologising she was firm on her saying that she will not declare them dead till she gets credible evidence and will continue to search. "I also told them that I am not in touch with any of the missing persons and all my information comes from other sources". "What benefit will my Government get by misleading the people on the issue", she asked. The government, Swaraj said, has been in touch with countries in the region, including Turkey, which can help India in the case.
