Chargers' trade for Cardale Jones means no RG3

Jones will compete with Kellen Clemens to back up Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers.

"Excited for the new start, can't wait to get to work", Jones tweeted after the trade was announced.

The Los Angeles Chargers have acquired quarterback Cardale Jones from the Buffalo Bills in exchange for an undisclosed conditional draft pick.

The Bills selected Jones in the fourth round of the 2016 draft under a different front office and different coaching staff. Jones gives the team a younger option at quarterback, even if he's limited to backup duties.

The trade reunites him with first-year coach Anthony Lynn, who served as the Bills' offensive coordinator for the bulk of Jones' rookie year.

Jones arrived on the team as an ultra-raw prospect with a strong arm, but little else in the way of accuracy, consistency or pocket awareness.

"He's the type of quarterback you want waiting on the runway", Lynn told the Chargers' website on Wednesday, repeating a phrase he had used seven months earlier in Buffalo.

Just a day after reports surfaced the team worked out Robert Griffin III, the Bolts worked out a deal for Cardale, whom they evidently hope will be the backup to Philip Rivers.

Jones appeared in only one game as a rookie last season for the Bills. "He's accurate. I think his development has come along fine".

The former Ohio State star played only one game last season, going 6-for-11 for 96 yards and an interception in the season finale.

For the Bills, Jones became expendable after they signed veteran T.J. Yates and drafted fifth-rounder Nathan Peterman in April.
