Australian woman shot dead by United States police after calling 911

According to KSDK's sister station Kare 11, the Minneapolis police officer who shot and killed a woman who called 911 has been identified.

Minneapolis Mayor Betsy Hodges called for a probe of why officers were not using the body cameras they are equipped with during the incident that led to the death of Justine Damond, from Sydney, around midnight Saturday.

The mayor also questioned why the police body cameras and squad camera, which were introduced to the Minneapolis Police Department in 2016, were not switched on when the shooting occurred. Damond, who was in her pajamas, went to the driver's side door to talk to the officer.

Officer Noor's lawyer, Tom Plunkett, confirmed that his client had fired his weapon, killing Ms Damond, who taught yoga and meditation at the Lake Harriet Spiritual Community in Minneapolis.

"I share your questions and concerns and continue to seek answers".

"We have few facts at this point", she said Sunday at a news conference.

The officers have been placed on administrative leave and the Minnesota Department of Public Safety Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is investigating the shooting, a Minneapolis Police Department spokesman tells PEOPLE. Both officers had their body cameras turned off, authorities said. One of the officers shot and killed the woman.

Minneapolis Mayor Betsy Hodges said one of the

Peter Suffoletto, whose cousin John Ruszczyk is Ms Damond's father, said she held dual Australian-US citizenship. The friend said that Justine often spoke of how much better things were in her native Australia where gun restrictions are much tighter.

Officials are trying to find video evidence of the incident.

The son of Damond's fiancé addressed the shooting in a live Facebook video Sunday afternoon. She had trained as a veterinary surgeon, according to her website, however, she had been working as a motivational healer. Mr. Damon was on a business trip at the time.

Ruszczyk family said in a statement released by DFAT,"This is a very hard time for our family". The medical examiner will release the woman's identity and the cause and manner of death once the autopsy is complete and family notifications have taken place.

"I mean ask anybody here, they're shocked", said a student of Damond's, Corey Birkholz, who was amongst the 200 who gathered at a vigil to commemorate their teacher.

"Basically, my mom's dead because a police officer shot her for reasons I don't know", he said.
