Manchester United are unlikely to offer Zlatan Ibrahimovic an extended contract

Confirmation is expected on Friday, when the Premier League will publish its list of retained players.

Things might have been different but for a season-ending knee injury to the club's top scorer, which is likely to keep Zlatan out until at least January.

With Ibrahimovic's current one-year deal expiring, United are understood to have the option of exercising a 12-month extension.

Manchester United are "unlikely" to offer Zlatan Ibrahimovic another contract for the upcoming season, according to reports.

The sources said United have decided it does not make economic sense to continue to pay Ibrahimovic reported wages of more than £300,000-a-week with no prospect of him playing for at least the first five months of the season.

Although there is no rule restricting a club from approaching a player excluded from their retained list at a later point regarding a new deal, the list will include details of any offers already made.

Ibrahimovic scored 28 goals for United and became hugely popular among the supporters but, at 35, he is not expected to be kept on with manager Jose Mourinho looking at recruiting a new first-choice "number 9" - Daily Telegraph.

Real Madrid's Alvaro Morata is just one of the names mentioned to relpace Ibrahimovic in the summer, after United cooled their interest in Atletico Madrid's Antione Griezmann.
