Russia criticises US for 'anti-Cuban' approach says it sides with Cuba

"This is not about the Cuban military, it is about politics, as evidenced by the President's decision to make this announcement in Miami", Sarah Stephens, an expert on US-Cuba policy, said, "and the administration's unwillingness to make a serious strategic argument for the policy". And the idea that we can make change by disengaging or turning inward has been contradicted by every policy discussion I've had in Cuba - whether in a classroom with a Cuban law student - or a conversation with a street vendor in Old Havana. The president claimed that he would seek a "better deal" and refuse to lift the embargo on Cuba until: (1) the Castro regime was no longer in power, (2) free and fair elections had occurred, (3) all political prisoners had been freed, and (4) all political parties were legally permitted.

Reversing history's wheel, taking up a policy again, which former president Barack Obama labeled a failure and a holdover of the Cold War, is not a smart thing to do, by any means.

"US policy must support that right".

Despite Obama's contempt for Liberty and palling around with Raul "the Reformer", the Cuban Commission of Human Rights and National Reconciliation has reported the Castro military increased its political detentions from 718 in 2015 to 1,095 recorded in just the first six months of 2016.

The only buyer of US agricultural goods in Cuba is called Alimport, a state-run entity that isn't connected to the business arm of the Cuban Revolutionary Armed Forces, known as GAESA.

The Cuban people enjoy fundamental rights and freedoms and can proudly show some achievements that are still a chimera for many countries of the world, including the United States, such as the right to health, education and social security; equal pay for equal work, children's rights as well as the rights to food, peace and development.

The American Soybean Association (ASA) submitted comments this week to both the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regarding regulations in response to advances in genetic engineering. He said they would instead create unity behind the communist leadership. Certainly foreign competitors of U.S. construction and travel companies are thrilled by this new policy, as it keeps American businesses out of the market.

"Unfortunately, today's moves actually limit the possibility for positive change on the island and risk ceding growth opportunities to other countries that, frankly, may not share America's interest in a free and democratic Cuba that respects human rights", Myron Brilliant, the chamber's executive vice president and head of worldwide affairs, said in a statement emailed to reporters.

Trump's revised approach calls for stricter enforcement of a longtime ban on Americans going to Cuba as tourists, and seeks to prevent US dollars from being used to fund what the Trump administration sees as a repressive military-dominated government.

In the long run, though, I'm confident that the common dreams and connections that exist between our two peoples are too deep to be discouraged by any change in U.S. policy.

My opinion: Trump's limited reversal of Obama's opening to Cuba is political theater with very little real impact. If anything, a hardening of U.S. policy on Cuba will prevent reforms and empower those who warned that the USA could not be trusted as an honest partner. According to him, it's so that human rights are respected in Cuba and so that the current political system is changed for another which resembles and is more similar to that of the United States. "You kept your promise; you stand in solidarity with the Cuban people and freedom-loving people everywhere; and you are putting American values and US national security interests first", he said.

The policy change allowed the president to claim credit for taking a tough stand while leaving in place numerous changes his predecessor had made, which polls have shown are broadly supported, including by most Republicans.

The United States are not in the position to teach us lessons. Although the policy changes that Trump is proposing are minor, his changes and sharp rhetoric towards Cuba may anger domestic voters as well leaders throughout the hemisphere.
