Trump's tweet Friday morning came after a series of angry tweets Wednesday in which he also complained about a "witch hunt" and criticized the investigation into ties between his campaign and Russia as "a phony collusion with the Russians story".

Depending on how events play out, the Justice Department could face a crisis not seen since the so-called Saturday Night Massacre when President Richard Nixon's attorney general and deputy attorney general resigned after being ordered to fire the independent special prosecutor overseeing the Watergate investigation, said Jeffrey Cramer, a former federal prosecutor.

"The President's response was as it related to the Washington Post report". An official of Trump's transition confirmed the laywer's internal order sent Thursday.

"The Fake News Media hates when I use what has turned out to be my very powerful Social Media - over 100 million people!"

California Sen. Dianne Feinstein said Trump's tweets are sending a message "that he believes the rule of law doesn't apply to him and that anyone who thinks otherwise will be fired".

Associated Press and the NORC Center for Public Affairs Research released a new poll this week, and it found that approximately 61% of surveyed Americans believe that Trump tried to "obstruct the investigation" into Russia's 2016 election interference.

Earlier this week, a friend of Trump said the president was considering it.

According to Thursday's Post report, investigators have also been looking into the financial dealings of other Trump associates, including former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn, Trump's former campaign chairman Paul Manafort, and former foreign-policy adviser Carter Page.

Trump's young presidency has been battered by allegations - under investigation both by Congress and the FBI - that Russian Federation interfered to sway the 2016 election in his favour, in possible collusion with Trump's campaign team. Trump fired Comey in May. She's the associate attorney general, which makes her third in command at the Justice Department behind Rosenstein and Sessions.

So, now, Trump tweets it is a witch hunt that Rosenstein is investigating him for firing Comey.

The president has denied trying to influence the investigation but has acknowledged in an interview that Russian Federation was on his mind when he dismissed Comey.

Deputy Attorney-General Rod Rosenstein submitted a widely circulated memo to the President last month raising concerns over Mr. Comey's performance, but Mr. Trump later asserted that he had already made the decision himself to fire Mr. Comey. "I can go around them", the tweet read.

He also claimed that the person investigating him advised him to fire Comey, though it's unclear whom he was referring to.

Trump said that "nobody has been able to show any proof yet". But Rosenstein, too, may ultimately have to hand off oversight of the probe given his own role in Comey's firing.
