Massive Minecraft 'Better Together Update' from Microsoft is Literally a Game Changer

While the Xbox One X reveal understandably dominated the headlines from Microsoft's E3 press conference, the software giant made another huge announcement: Minecraft is going cross-platform. Community run servers will also be allowed across the platforms.
The changes come with the "Better Together" update to Minecraft, so named because Microsoft is bringing some relatively isolated versions of the game into the fold. It even works on the Nintendo Switch. Every phone, console, and nearly any device that has a working screen can play Minecraft. And a side effect of the change is that the console versions of the game will no longer be limited to a maximum size of 5,120 by 5.120 blocks.
"We've wanted to integrate cross-platform for ages, essentially making a version of Minecraft that's consistent no matter what device you're choosing to play on", reads the blog post.
"The original Java PC version and all other isolated versions will have "Edition" names, like Minecraft:Wii U Edition and Minecraft:Java Edition", the spokesperson said. This enables you to start a game on one platform and then pick up that world and save on any of the others that are part of this unification under the "Bedrock Engine". Mac users are, at least so far, out of luck.
Additionally, Minecraft will "bring all players together" with "seamless switching of input methods and controllers". The Windows Central blogger tweeted "Yes to Nintendo Switch, PlayStation refused" regarding cross-platform play with Minecraft. This gives the player an unlimited amount of land to explore in the game; a significant upgrade from the current 3x3 mile limit. This is way different from Minecraft Realms, a private cloud-based server for smaller clusters. This makes them easier to manage, but the connectivity is what really makes it stand out, Time reports. The downside is that getting to a server requires, at the very least, obtaining its IP addresses from somewhere on the internet and entering them manually. Launching with four servers, Lifeboat, Mineplex, InPVP and Cubecraft - which lets players join public servers that have monthly users numbering in the millions according to the company.
