La Crosse Kmart on list of stores to close

La Crosse Kmart included in list of Sears company closings

The list of stores, most of which the company plans to close in the fall, also includes Kmart stores in Liverpool and Cortland.

Earlier this year, the company announced it would be closing 78 Kmart stores and 26 Sears stores by spring.

Sears at Midway Mall in Elyria is set to close this year, the company announced Tuesday.

Sears Holding Corp.is giving more of its stores the ax.

Sears announced another round of closures nationwide, including one local store.

Sears has not yet publicly confirmed the closure.

The pharmacy in the La Crosse Kmart closed May 22, and the auto center at the Valley View Mall Sears closed May 27.

"Those associates that are eligible will receive severance and have the opportunity to apply for open positions at area Sears or Kmart stores", Riefs said.

The latest tally of stores to close, reported by Business Insider, is 72. The Dothan location is the only Kmart location in Alabama other than Muscle Shoals that is on the list.

"Sears has almost halved its store footprint since 2012, from 2,019 then to fewer than 1,200 this year once all planned closures are made", it reports.

The closings will bring the total number of open stores down to 1,200.

The closings are part of a campaign to make both Kmart and Sears stores more profitable, a source told USA Today. Sears, like Penney's, owns its store building at Regency.
