Logjam: Casey, 3 others tied at the top in US Open

18 June 2017, 01:47 | Rose Hansen

Dustin Johnson, Rory McIlroy and Jason Day - the top three players in the world, all of them professing expansive Erin Hills to be flawless for their games - spent Friday cleaning out their lockers after missing the cut.

Overnight leader Rickie Fowler is one of three players a shot off the pace, with just eight strokes splitting those making the cut and the world's top three players all making an early exit. He tugged a 3-wood into the rough at the par-4 11 that led to bogey, then three-putted his next two holes.

Matsuyama birdied six of his first eight holes Friday, shot 30 on his opening and flirted, albeit briefly, with shooting golf's magical 63 in a major, eventually settling for a 65 in Round 2 of the U.S. Open.

McIlroy and Day combined to play Erin Hills in 15-over for two rounds.

Sarah Stirk and Rich Beem review the big talking points from the second round of the 117th US Open at Erin Hills.

"But you never really know until you put a card in your hand and you're under the gun little bit".

"I hate just being in the situation where I've been in a good spot and maybe let it get away from me a little bit and let some mistakes compound and turn a round that you (just) kind of fight through it and end up being in a decent spot after the day", Fowler said.

Neither did McIroy and Day, though all three made their share of trips into the club-grabbing fescue as well.

Low scores were available. That should have affected everyone the same way, but it was particularly troublesome for the field's elite players.

Proof of that came from Hideki Matsuyama and Chez Reavie, both of whom shot 7-under 65 Friday.

Despite their respective struggles, neither Johnson, McIlroy or Day took issue with the course, instead taking ownership of the problems that cut their weekend short.

No one has ever broken that 63 barrier in any of golf's four major championships.

The 2016 Masters champion withdrew before his tee time in the second round on Friday.

Day, who won the 2015 PGA Championship up the road at Whistling Straits, had to birdie his last hole Thursday to break 80.

Were they just not as sharp as they normally would be for a major?

Despite the lack of marquee names atop the leaderboard, this is hardly an unknown group of contenders battling it out for the U.S. Open title.

"The fairways are wide enough", Koepka said, citing only a few holes where driver will stay in the bag.

"I feel pretty confident", Koepka said after his round. "Some of it nearly takes the bombers out of it".

While he was hitting the ball beautifully down those 60-yard corridors in his practice rounds, they narrowed considerably when he was handed a scorecard.

Not that anyone is complaining about the course. Fowler shot a 73 and was still very much in the hunt at a second straight major.

Day was particularly disappointed as he felt he had prepared properly for the championship. "Myself and Rory, we didn't quite have the greatest tee game (Thursday) and it showed in the scores".

In all, 32 players are within five shots of the lead.

"It's just the way the game of golf is", Snedeker said. "I've got to put it close". The leaderboard is shaping up quite nicely.

"I mean it doesn't really get me too worked up, whatever happens, bogey, double, birdie, eagle, I'm pretty chill anyway", Koepka said. Lots of talent, just looking for that one break-out moment.
