Jeff Sessions Backing New Sanctuary City Law in Texas

People attending the Houston City Council meeting on Tuesday raise their hands after State Senator Sylvia Garcia voiced her support of the city joining the lawsuit challenging SB4 the state's'sanctuary cities ban

Texas" "Sanctuary Cities' law could lead to major controversy in the cities themselves.

In its filing, the Justice Department argues the bill is constitutional and that Texas' new law is not preempted by federal immigration law. He and his supporters have cited cases in which illegal immigrants allegedly committed heinous crimes, including murder, after they were released instead of being turned over to immigration officials. "Usually it's going to be along the lines of whether or not they speak English well enough, whether or not they appear to be Latino or foreign", says Cedillo. Elected and appointed officials could lose their jobs, police chiefs could face misdemeanor charges and possible jail time, and local governments could incur fines of up to $25,500 a day if they adopt or enforce policies that prevent law enforcement officers from asking about a person's immigration status or complying with requests to detain immigrants.

"It's a little bit nerve-wracking because we just don't know what to expect", El Cenizo Mayor Raul Reyes said. The largest city in Texas on Wednesday added its name to the list of cities opposing the law, saying it violated the guarantees of free speech and equal protection under the Constitution.

"I'll suggest that what we had in Arizona was a far more aggressive piece of legislation", said Darren McCarty, special county to the Texas attorney general. Several groups including the Texas Organizing Project, Workers Defense Project and ACLU of Texas plan to rally and protest outside the courthouse starting at 8:30 a.m.

Houston, the state's largest city, has said it also supports the lawsuit.

"No one in the history of the United States has ever attempted this in any state".

A portion of Saturday's meeting touched on how immigrants should interact with police.

The U.S. Department of Justice has officially filed a brief supporting Texas' sanctuary cities ban. What would happen if a rank-and-file police officer who determined that someone wasn't in the country legally didn't turn over that information to U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement?

In April, a federal judge in San Francisco temporarily halted that order after the city and Santa Clara County filed a lawsuit and the Trump administration acknowledged that its crackdown was far narrower than the president and his aides had indicated.

The American Immigration Lawyers Association has moved its 2018 conference from Grapevine, Texas., to San Francisco because of the law.

Some cities in Texas say the law, if upheld, could prompt sports organizations and others to boycott the state, similar to the effect of a controversial bathroom bill in North Carolina.
