Family members: Seattle Mom Killed By Police Was Strong, Independent Woman

While the effort likely meant to make the city's officers more available to the Seattle residents, it backfired when its public affairs director Sgt. Sean Whitcomb used Twitch to address questions surrounding the death of Lyles, a pregnant woman shot and killed by officers in her home after reporting a burglary.

Police say she confronted the officers with two kitchen knives when they responded to a burglary call at her apartment.

The killing has prompted outrage among many, including Lyles' family, who questioned why the officers couldn't use nonlethal methods to subdue the diminutive 30-year-old and suggested that race played a role.

He said McNew, a Seattle officer since 2008, asked him to stun Lyles.

Lyles, whom relatives called "Leena", grew up in Seattle and was largely raising two boys and two girls on her own - including a 4-year girl with Down syndrome - but she had a supportive network of siblings, cousins, aunts and others, Williams said. But Anderson said there was no need to frisk her because it was a typical burglary call.

"She's actually the one to dial 911 and ... she ends up dead on the floor in front of her children", he told the crowd Tuesday night. "The Seattle police shot the wrong one today".

'And at that point, fearing for what was about to happen, what she would do to me, um, being stuck in that spot, I fired my handgun, ' he told investigators, noting he remembered hearing shots coming from Anderson's location. But they nevertheless found themselves with little time to react when she suddenly snapped about two minutes after they began taking her report.

"Her life wasn't ideal, like none of us are", he said.

That doesn't mean the officers shouldn't have entered Lyles' apartment to investigate the burglary, he said.

Anderson told investigators he wasn't carrying a Taser because the battery had died two weeks earlier.

Both officers were equipped with less lethal force options, police said.

As he maintained cover with his gun on Lyles, Anderson said, McNew picked up a child grabbing onto Lyles.

But a video posted Wednesday in which Sgt. Sean Whitcomb discussed Sunday's fatal shooting of Charleena Lyles struck many as inappropriate, although Whitcomb's video-game character just walked around rather than firing any shots.
