"We will do everything in our power to support their loved ones, and we will not forget their sacrifice and service".
Georgia's top corrections official said he's relieved the escaped inmates sought in the killings of two prison guards have been caught.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the two officers killed and with all law enforcement involved in the pursuit of the escaped felons", Powers said.
Donnie Rowe, 43, and Ricky DuBose, 24, are alleged to have shot and killed two correctional officers in Georgia while they were being transferred to another facility by transport bus.
Det. Sgt. Dan Goodwin of the Rutherford County Sheriff's Office said at around 6 p.m., officers spotted a vehicle wanted in a carjacking in Shelbyville, Tennessee.
According to Goodwin, the pair opened fired on two police vehicles and fled on foot after crashing near mile marker 91.
According to a report from The Atlanta Journal Constitution, Georgia Bureau of Investigation Director Vernan Keenan said the fugitives committed a home invasion of an elderly couple and then took their vehicle. "These are risky, seriously unsafe vicious hoodlums that need to be apprehended", said Putnam County Sheriff Howard Sills, who is coordinating the search.
A cash reward was being offered for information leading to the men's arrest.
Both Sills and LeValley appealed for the public's help, urging people to call 911 immediately with any sign of them, rather than try to handle escaped inmates believed to be carrying the guards' 9 mm pistols. "Nobody wants to go to the bank - to go anywhere because we don't know where they are", Madison resident Sue Bailey told WSB. Hours later, authorities said the two broke into a home in Madison and stole clothes and food.
Authorities had been engaged in a massive manhunt for the fugitives, who escaped Tuesday during a prison transport.
Sills says it's possible the escapees may have fled Georgia after three days on the run.
The escapees were part of a group of 30 inmates being transported by bus by two armed guards.
Monica, 42, a sergeant, worked for the department for nearly eight years and leaves a wife. Burial will follow in Heritage Memorial Park. Billue, 58, was an employee for 10-years and leaves behind his father, brother and sister. The manhunt for both inmates continues into its third day Thursday. Many law enforcement officers from local, state and federal agencies are hunting for them.
The website states that Monica was a Chicago native and had lived in Baldwin County for the past 20 years.
Dubose and Rowe ran from the vehicle to the woods. Sills said investigators were trying to determine how the killers got out of the inmate cage and into the driver's compartment.
