Mumbai: The flagship Sensex on Thursday rallied 211 points to hit an all-time high of 31,494, lapping up a series of market-friendly measures taken by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi).
Nifty closed at 9,574 down by 55 points, whereas BSE Sensex closed lower by 152 points at 31,138.
It touched a new high of 31,522.87 points during intra-day trade. But soon, it headed down and settled with a marginal rise of 7.10 points, or 0.02 per cent, at 31,290.74.
On a weekly basis, the Sensex gained 81.81 points, or 0.26 per cent, while the broader Nifty shed 13.10 points, or 0.13 per cent.
The NSE Nifty also moved up by 57.60 points, or 0.6 percent, to 9,691.20.
However, the markets gave up all their gains during the second half of the trading session as weakness in global crude oil prices triggered heavy selling in the shares of oil marketing firms.
A mixed trend prevailed at other Asian bourses.
Meanwhile, Power Grid was the top gainer in Nifty, up 1.82 per cent followed by Vedanta, Aurobindo Pharma, Sun Pharma and ICICI Bank, which rose as much as 1.11 per cent.
Fortis Healthcare Ltd slumped as much as 15 percent to 168.25 rupees, its lowest in more than six months, after Malaysia's Integrated Healthcare Holdings said it was not engaged in any negotiations in India now.
