Democratic Unionists in Northern Ireland may be United Kingdom election key

Theresa May is expected to finalize her team of ministers later as she seeks to form a government with the support of the Democratic Unionist Party.

May's co-chiefs of staff, Nick Timothy and Fiona Hill, handed in their resignations on Saturday following the disastrous election, called by May to strengthen her position ahead of talks to leave the European Union, but which in the end left her weakened.

SIEGEL: The Conservatives evidently plan to govern with the Democratic Unionists, the dominant Protestant party in Northern Ireland providing the few votes in the House of Commons that they'll need to have a working majority.

The DUP has repeatedly used a controversial Stormont voting mechanism - the petition of concern - to prevent the legalisation of same-sex marriage, despite a majority of MLAs supporting the move at the last vote.

Jeremy Corbyn vowed to lead Britain out of the European Union as he insisted Labour is "ready any time" for another general election.

"I certainly think that there will be contact made over the weekend but I think it is too soon to talk about what we're going to do".

Pro-EU Member of Parliament Anna Soubry brought May's continued leadership into question in her acceptance speech. "As and when details are finalised both parties will put them forward", it said.

"My phone is full of texts from lots and lots of people from right across the party", he said. Labour will also push for more public spending on social welfare, free university education and higher taxes for the richest one percent.

Senior party figures have cautioned against any immediate leadership challenge, saying it would only cause further disruption as Britain prepares to start Brexit negotiations as early as June 19.

But for now, Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson says reports of a plot to remove May herself is "tripe".

Osborne, now editor of the London Evening Standard newspaper, said May's days in Downing Street are numbered.

He said: "I am backing Theresa May". She argued that Brexit, which Scotland largely rejected, changed the scenario to such an extent Scotland should be given a second referendum. With Thursday's election providing 29 new Labour MPs, Corbyn's energetic election campaign has paid off.

A party councillor in Ballymena reportedly claimed Hurricane Katrina, which killed more than 1,500 people in the USA, was God's revenge for New Orleans hosting an annual gay pride event.

A deal between the government and the DUP could also unsettle the precarious balance between Northern Ireland's British loyalist and Irish nationalist parties.

May spoke to the Irish Taoiseach (Prime Minister) Enda Kenny over the phone on Sunday. Other members of the party have criticized Mrs.

The 10 DUP MPs would provide vital support to Mrs May after her majority was wiped out as the snap election gamble backfired, leaving her with 318 seats.

It's all a distraction at a pressured time for the Prime Minister. But the exit poll was spot on with how many seats would go Conservative way. It was a part of the neoliberal consensus, the "third way" approach of triangulation that had come to dominate the political spectrum, essentially: trust in unfettered free-market capitalism, but throw in some small, lukewarm measures meant to mitigate its ravaging effects on the public.

To Theresa May's credit, she has stated that she believes no deal is better than a bad deal.

DUP leader Arlene Foster said she had spoken with Conservative leader May and would start talks on propping up the party, declaring that keeping Northern Ireland in the United Kingdom would be "our guiding star".
