Britain-EU Brexit talks to start Monday as planned

Britain's Prime Minister Theresa May returns to Downing Street with her husband Philip after traveling to Buckingham Palace to ask the Queen's permission to form a minority government in London

After a tumultuous week that pitched Britain into its deepest political crisis since the Brexit referendum a year ago, May's future was uncertain, darkened by her botched gamble on a snap election and muted response to a deadly fire in London.

A week after May lost her majority in an election she had called in the hope of strengthening her hand in the talks, some fellow Conservatives want her to focus more on limiting the damage to business and less on cutting immigration and other ties to the European Union when Britain leaves the bloc in March 2019.

The new United Kingdom government is yet to take a final shape despite announcement of new Cabinet members as a final deal with the Northern Irish Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) gets worked out. "We're ready, we'll be there as the European Union 27", government spokesman Steffen Seibert told reporters.

Foster later said it was "right and proper" for the DUP to support May's legislative program, which is due to be announced next week and will be the first formal test of her ability to govern.

Nicola Sturgeon took to Twitter to point out that this was all happening before May had managed to secure any agreement with the DUP to prop up her fledgling minority government.

The senior official at the Department for Exiting the European Union, Olly Robbins, has been in Brussels this week for preliminary talks.

"I know people want to talk about soft Brexit, hard Brexit, all of these things but what we want to see is a sensible Brexit and one that works for everybody. They are not matters for Westminster and therefore we will not be dealing with them at Westminster", she told the BBC.

For Brussels, a concern with starting talks on such models would be that Brexit supporters might end up blocking them, raising the risk of time running out to get any deal: "Would you".

May's plans included Britain's departure from the single market, as well as spelling out that no deal would be better than a bad deal, as far as the government was concerned.

But May, weakened by her election flop, opted to keep Hammond in his job along with other key ministers.

Mr Hammond said the United Kingdom "should prioritise protecting jobs, protecting economic growth and protecting prosperity".

Britain's Brexit ministry said on Friday that no deal could be struck on exiting unless the future relationship with the bloc was taken into account.

Following discussions in Brussels on Thursday, the offices of Brexit Secretary David Davis and the European Commission's chief negotiator Michel Barnier released a joint statement to confirm the date.

Brussels has insisted talks on the so-called divorce, taking in issues including the fee the United Kingdom will have to pay to sever its ties, must make sufficient progress before any discussion on a future trade agreement could begin.

But after a generation of discord over Europe inside her party, May's future could depend on her ability to please both the euroskeptic and pro-European factions in her party.
