Bangladesh need 266 to beat New Zealand in ICC Champions Trophy

ICC Champions Trophy

Bangladesh turned a batting collapse into a Champions Trophy thriller, chasing a target of 266 to defeat New Zealand by five wickets with 16 balls to spare in Cardiff.

Throughout the competition the Black Caps have been reliant on Kane Williamson, the lynchpin of the side, who made a century against Australia and 87 against England when no other player passed 40. Bangladesh made two changes to their line-up, with Imrul Kayes and Mehedi dropped in favour of brining in an extra bowler in quick Taskin Ahmed and allrounder Mossadek.

But this tournament saw them leave without a win, having lost to both England and Bangladesh in Cardiff after their match against Australia was washed out. But with a horrific weather forecast for Birmingham on Saturday for the Australia-England clash, a result here could be pivotal.

Bangladesh will be praying that England beat Australia at Edgbaston tomorrow (or indeed for Australia to be part of a third consecutive rained-out affair) and then they will play the victor of Sunday's South Africa vs India game, in a knockout match for a spot in the final.

It all leaves Bangladesh and New Zealand needing to win in Wales and then hope England put one over their arch-rivals, assuming more bad weather does not disrupt those calculations.

New Zealand wouldn't have imagined it would come down to this when they struck four early blows.

With Shakib and Mahmudullah gaining confidence, there were some pensive New Zealand faces.

"That will be nice (if England win), but we can't just expect Australia to lose that game", Mortaza told reporters, "I would like to say the best of luck to both teams, because whatever we could do we did".

"That's the challenge tomorrow".

"Normally when we bat, we don't speak too much". Ross Taylor and Kane Williamson were highest scorers for New Zealand with 63 and 57 runs respectively. The victor can advance to the semifinals depending on the result of the England-Australia game at Edgbaston on Saturday.

Bangladesh was in for a shocker when the began their innings by losing the first wicket when the score was just 0. Shakib and Mahmudullah shared the first 200-run stand for Bangladesh in ODI history.

Bangladesh's bowlers got on top of New Zealand though, with just three boundaries coming in the last seven overs. He ripped through New Zealand's fragile middle order with 3-13 in three overs. "They outplayed us today".

Broom, along with new batsman James Neesham (23), displayed some quality cricket as the duo forged a crucial 27-run partnership before Broom was dismissed by offie Mosaddek Hossain.

Mortaza said that he is extremely happy with the way hs team has performed in the last few years and believes that this performance will be imperative for the team's preparations to the 2019 Cricket World Cup.

"They outplayed us throughout their partnership and now they have every chance of going through".
