Coalition Progresses in Mosul, Raqqa to Defeat ISIS, Spokesman Says

Coalition Strikes Target ISIS in Iraq, Syria, June 8, 2017

Amid the advances, it was reported by local media activists and the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights that an internet cafe in Jazrah was hit in a coalition airstrike, killing 17.

Its regional spokesman David Swanson said as many as 100,000 people "may stay trapped" inside during the assault.

He said SDF forces were also advancing on the northern front outside the city, and had repelled an attack by IS fighters as they pushed towards the city limits from the west.

Col. Joseph Scrocca, a spokesman for the USA coalition fighting ISIS, said in a statement sent to Reuters that the militants' resistance had been "minimal" outside Raqqa and they were retreating "to protect their fortifications inside the city".

The Russian military on Friday accused the U.S-led coalition in Syria of providing safe corridors for Daesh to leave the area around its stronghold of Raqqa, the Associated Press reported. "It raises a question (about) why they do it and what their real goals are".

The Observatory said the SDF now controlled around two-thirds of Al-Meshleb and was some 400 metres (yards) from the neighbouring Al-Senaa district.

ISIS extremists have been fighting back against the advancing forces with snipers as well as drones armed with explosives, according to the SDF.

The SDF has scored a series of victories since launching its operation to take Raqa in November, including capturing the strategic town of Tabqa and its adjacent dam in May.

The group said the district had been emptied of its civilian population before the SDF entered, and ISIL had dug defensive trenches and tunnels in the area in a bid to hold off attacking forces.

Around 300,000 civilians were believed to have been living under IS rule in Raqqa, although thousands have fled in recent months leaving 160,000 in the city according to the UN.

But thousands have fled in recent months, and the United Nations humanitarian office said on Tuesday that it estimated about 160,000 people remained in the city.

Mahmoud said the US-led coalition against Isis was supporting the ground operation from the air, but that American special forces stationed in the area had not entered the city.

The US-led coalition said the drone was downed after it fired at coalition forces near the Al-Tanaf garrison, where anti-IS Syrian rebels are being trained.

"Russia has been very helpful and I think that the calm we see today is largely due to their efforts", Davis said.

"As long as pro-regime forces are oriented toward Coalition and partnered forces the potential for conflict is escalated", CENTCOM said in a statement to The Associated Press.
