Texas asks Feds to reinstate funding it lost when it snubbed Planned Parenthood

Planned Parenthood of the Heartland is closing four of its clinics in Iowa because of a new state policy approved by the Republican-led legislature and Governor Branstad.

On Friday, Republican Gov. Terry Branstad signed a $7.2B budget bill that blocks $3 million in federal Medicaid funding from family planning and creates a state-run family planning program.

The state's challenge Thursday to the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals came a day after U.S. District Judge Howard Sachs refused to delay enforcing the preliminary injunction he issued last month in favor of Planned Parenthood affiliates with Missouri health centers.

The Burlington, Keokuk and Sioux City clinics will close on June 30.

The locations served by those four Planned Parenthood clinics represent both sides of the state, and some of its most densely populated communities. The agency, which provides family planning services including abortions, is closing facilities in Sioux City, Burlington, Keokuk and Bettendorf.

In a statement, Susan B. Anthony List President Marjorie Dannenfelser argued that "Planned Parenthood's enterprise is crumbling, even while they are still raking in over half a billion dollars a year from taxpayers".

"Planned Parenthood's CEO is claiming that "defunding Planned Parenthood will set a health care crisis in motion in Iowa", stated Jenifer Bowen, spokeswoman for Iowa Right to Life".

Planned Parenthood says almost half of its patients are below the federal poverty level.

"The loss of funding from the Iowa Family Planning Waiver itself is close to $2 million", Allen said.

"We have seen what happens in states like Texas, and now in Iowa, when politicians attack access to care at Planned Parenthood-it's devastating, and sometimes deadly, for the women who are left with nowhere to turn for care", said Planned Parenthood's Chief Medical Officer Dr. Raegan McDonald-Mosley, in a statement emailed to Jezebel. Texas similarly "defunded" the group in the state, resulting in almost 30,000 fewer women receiving birth control and other care the organization provides. "We are constantly looking at ways to remain effective, and over the years, we realized the need to transition". Over 14,000 patients who trust PP with their care will no longer have access to their provider of choice. "If we care about taking care of people, we would fund Planned Parenthood and keep these types of services available", he said after a meeting at the United Food and Commercial Workers union hall on West Central Park Avenue.

"If it weren't for the care I received there, I would not be where I am today", said Roberson, who moved to New York City in July to pursue a career in apparel merchandising and design.
