"He, however, didn't try", she said.

Jammu: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti on Saturday said Prime Minister Narendra Modi is the only hope to address the 70-year-old Kashmir issue once and for all. But if anyone can find a solution to the Jammu & Kashmir problem, it is PM Narendra Modi. The BJP state unit and the RSS have been questioning her ways of checking escalating violence in the Valley.

She said, Prime Minister Narendra Modi showed his strength by visiting Pakistan amid tension between the two countries past year.

Mehbooba was addressing a gathering after inaugurating a flyover here.

Mufti lauded Modi's visit to Lahore on December 25, 2015, and said it was "a sign of strength". It was the first visit by an Indian PM in a decade.

Mufti reiterated that it were her later father Mufti Mohammad Sayeed and the then Prime Minister and BJP stalwart Atal Bihari Vajpayee who successfully worked towards improving relations with Pakistan but these were again unhinged as a result of lack of initiatives by the UPA governments. "But unfortunately Mufti was out of the government and Vajpayeeji left, and the process came to a grinding halt", she said.

She said only PM Modi can help people of Jammu and Kashmir in these troubling circumstances and take them out of morass.

Complimenting the people of Jammu for maintaining communal harmony and brotherhood despite "provocation", the chief minister said nobody will be allowed to disturb the peaceful atmosphere, and mischief-mongers will be dealt with sternly.

Earlier, when Mehbooba met Modi in Delhi, she was told to bring normalcy in the state which will follow talks, reports said. Shahyad woh bhi koshish karna chahtey they ki dono mulkon mein jo confrontation hai usko khatam kar ke Jammu Kashmir ko is musibat se nikala jaye.

Vohra had met Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday, and apprised him of the security situation in the state.

Replying to the comment made by Congress leader GS Charak that no developmental work has taken place in Jammu, Mufti said the situation in Kashmir is not good and it affects Jammu also.

"The chief minister said militancy declined during that period and there was peace on the borders. It was not an ordinary feat", she said in an apparent hint to push for talks.

The Mehbooba Mufti-led PDP-BJP coalition government has been fighting rising militancy and widespread violent protests in Kashmir since previous year following the killing of Hizbul commander Burhan Wani.
