Ford using first over-the-air software updates to its 2016 cars

Ford brings Android Auto and Apple CarPlay to its 2016 fleet

If your vehicle is Wi-Fi-enabled, you can perform an over-the-air (OTA) update from within the vehicle to upgrade to the latest version of SYNC 3 (using the Automatic System Updates feature).

While you can take your vehicle to a dealer to do the update for you, that isn't necessary as there are a couple of DIY options ... Android Auto is supported for smartphones running Android 5.0 and higher, while CarPlay is compatible with iPhone 5 or later, updated to iOS 7.1 or higher.

2016-year Ford vehicles equipped with the automaker's SYNC 3 technology can now download an update fitting them out with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Android, Android Auto, Google Maps and Google Play are trademarks of Google Inc.

For CarPlay, users will still also need to upgrade their vehicle's USB hub to make this work (which will also incur a dealer visit and a cost), but for those on Android, all that's required is a simple software installation. This marks the first time that Ford will enable one of its updates to be applied via WiFi. If any update becomes available then the SYNC system will download and install the update in the background.

Sync is the name of Ford's in-car infotainment system that for a number of years (and versions) has allowed you to connect your smartphone and get easy access to some of its services. And SYNC 3 is created to perform the update as long as Wi-Fi is connected prior to the vehicle turning off, therefore there is no need to keep the vehicle running for the update to take place.
