Elon Musk Teases Test of 125-MPH Underground Electric Car Sled

Musk also released a video on Instagram showing a proof of concept of the "electric sled" that will serve as the basis for transporting passenger vehicles underground at speeds up to 125 miles per hour (200 km/h). The video description further notes that with this sled, a commute from Westwood to LAX would take just five minutes. That's certainly better than sitting in traffic above ground for 45 minutes.

The Boring Company concept started in late 2016 with Musk tweeting about how much he hated being stuck in traffic. That includes Tesla, his electric vehicle company, as well as rocket firm SpaceX and now The Boring Company.

As Musk explained during a TED talk in Vancouver last month, such sleds could serve as "car skates" for high-speed transit beneath L.A. or other cities. Musk unveiled the video on his Instagram page Friday. Musk envisions that it will eventually stretch from LAX to Culver City, Santa Monica, Westwood and Sherman Oaks. "Future tunnels will cover all of greater LA", Musk wrote in his Instagram account. It will reach a few hundred feet long once its finished, he said. As part of the project, Musk unveiled a tunnel-digging machine outside Hawthorne-based SpaceX.

Musk said he intends to increase the power of the tunnel-boring machine tenfold.

Here's a concept video showing what a completed tunnel network would look like beneath Los Angeles.

California is predisposed to earthquakes, which might pose a serious challenge to Musk's high-tech network of underground tunnels.

Musk acknowledged improvement in boring technology may have crossover benefit for another vision of his for using tunnels to speed travel: Hyperloops, in which passengers would be transported in pods at near supersonic speeds through tubes with reduced air pressure.
