Crews get air support as they battle Los Angeles brush fires

Black Canyon City residents evacuated due to brush fire

Massive fire in Black Canyon City

No sooner had firefighters gotten the first fire contained, when they were called out to another brushfire in Mandeville Canyon, in Brentwood, at about 12:45 p.m., that was much closer to houses.

The fire was caused by a worker doing weed abatement for brush clearance, Stewart said.

The fire was moving at a moderate speed uphill and was estimated to have scorched 30 acres as of 3:20 p.m.

The canyon was shut down at Sunset Boulevard to accommodate firefighting operations, LAFD officials said.

A brush fire burning on the northeast side of Black Canyon City led to mandatory evacuations as fire crews from multiple agencies rushed to control the blaze Sunday morning.

Because of a lack of brush, "the fire ran out of fuel, so it stopped", she said. More than 150 city firefighters were dispatched, along with county crews to attack the flames.

No homes are now under mandatory evacuation but some people have left voluntarily, Margaret Stewart with the Los Angeles Fire Department tells KPCC. Another command post was set up at the Mountaingate Country Club, north of the fire and just west of the San Diego (405) Freeway.

Logistical equipment that had been assigned to an earlier fire in Lake View Terrace - which was burning into the Angeles National Forest - was redirected to a fire station in Van Nuys after the Brentwood fire broke out.

"What families need to know is that they should listen to the authorities and if it's time to evacuate, they should do so", American Red Cross spokesman Collin Williams said. However, no injuries have been reported and an investigation into the incidents is ongoing.
