Kenyans Geoffrey Kirui, Edna Kiplagat sweep titles at Boston Marathon

18 April 2017, 02:14 | Audrey Hill

It would be five more years before women were officially invited to race in the Boston Marathon, but Switzer's actions during the 1967 race are remembered as the trail-blazing effort that propelled women into competitive running alongside men.

The 38-year-old policewoman, who missed the cut for the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, smashed her competition with an unofficial time of 2:21:53. The Boston Marathon will retire number 261 in Switzer's honor after she runs the race on Monday with supporters from around the world. She ran well in the Houston Half Marathon and the Prague Half Marathon, and has been getting much pre-race attention.

Hug, a seven-time world champion and two-time Paralympic gold medalist, set a new world record on Monday with a finish time of 1:18:04.

Rose Chelimo, the Kenyan-born runner who now represents Bahrain, was second in 2:22:51 while Jordan Hasay of the United States was third in 2:23:00.

With two-time fourth-place finisher Shalane Flanagan out with a back injury, the US hopes on the women's side are represented by Desi Linden, a two-time Olympian who has thrice placed in the top 10 in Boston.

Kirui, 24, produced a devastating sprint with four miles to go to settle an enthralling tactical battle with American rival Galen Rupp, the 2016 Olympic bronze medallist.April 17, 2017; Boston, MA, USA; Geoffrey Kirui and Galen Rupp race in the 2017 Boston Marathon.

Kirui outran Galen Rupp of the U.S.to take the men's race in an official time of 2 hours, 9 minutes, 37 seconds.

Rupp finished unofficially in 2:09.58. If she dropped out it would validate every doubter who said women couldn't run the marathon - so she kept running, refused to quit, and told Arnie that she'd finish the race "on [her] hands and knees, if she had to".

At the finish line, Evans said it felt nice to get back onto the course and he had "no qualms" about the safety of the race four years after the bombing. The straight-line Boston course doesn't qualify for world records because of the possibility of a supportive tailwind like the one on Monday.

Switzer had no intentions of dropping out of that fateful race, nor did she expect to be such a barrier-breaker (Roberta Bingay Gibb had actually completed the Boston Marathon the year before without an official bib). Sculptor Pablo Eduardo will create the markers. The elite men racers are steps behind the women, rounding mile 20, according the Boston Athletic Association. "Art is a powerful vehicle for remembrance and healing, and my goal is for this art to embody the spirit of those we lost and the spirit of the city they loved". Along the way, they were expected to be slowed by temperatures rising into the 70s.

Update 10:40 a.m.: The Boston Athletic Association announces the victor of the men's push-rim: Marcel Hug.

Update 10:55 a.m.: Though some athletes have already completed the marathon's 26.2 miles, others haven't even started the race yet.
