French presidential candidate targeted by hackers

Macron campaign says it fought off cyberespionage attempts

French presidential candidate Emmanuel Macron's campaign was targeted in recent weeks by hackers, using methods similar to the hacks in the United States targeting the Democratic National Committee previous year, according to a new report by cybersecurity researchers.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitri Peskov told Russian news outlets that the country was not interfering with the French election, or any foreign election, according to the Wall Street Journal.

However, he said that the nature and timing of so-called phishing attacks and web assaults on the Macron campaign had stirred worries that Russian Federation was repeating in France what American intelligence agencies said was a concerted effort to undermine Hillary Clinton's campaign.

The domains were spotted by the researchers as they were created by the group, which likely used them in an attempt to steal credentials and hack the Macron campaign.

Those websites were registered to a block of web addresses that Trend Micro's researchers say belong to the Russian intelligence unit they refer to as Pawn Storm, but is alternatively known as Fancy Bear, APT 28 or the Sofacy Group.

"We have seen that phishing sites were set up and the fingerprints were really the same actors as in the DNC breach", Hacquebord said. The campaign has previously made allegations that Russian Federation was launching hacking campaigns against Macron staff.

It detected four Macron-themed fake domains used by a group it has followed called Pawn Storm. Russian President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly denied any involvement in the us election, and Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Monday that allegations the country was now trying to influence the outcome of the French election are "utterly erroneous".

Mahjoubi said the attempts to penetrate the Macron campaign date back to December.

The Kremlin scoffed at the report.

Former Asst. Sec. of State David J. Kramer, now with the McCain Institute in Washington, says the two also have a number of things in common: a focus on national sovereignty, a distrust for global institutions, a keen focus on fighting Islamic terrorism, an embrace of traditional values and a vigorous style.

The French elections were carefully monitored for digital interference following suspicions that hackers backed by Moscow had attempted to influence the United States electoral contest in 2016.

"The way the mainstream media is playing this up is that [Russia] had an influence on the election", Spicer said. Hackers with alleged ties to Russian Federation also leaked emails from the Democratic National Committee servers.

German intelligence agencies have warned that Russian hackers could attempt to disrupt Germany's upcoming federal elections using methods that mirror those used in the U.S. election.

The Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) released the report called "Assessing Russian Activities and Intentions in Recent US Elections". After initially rejecting any Russian involvement in the hacking, Trump acknowledged earlier this year that Russia was responsible.
